Acinetobacter baumannii and MRSA contamination on reusable phlebotomy tourniquets.
OBJECTIVE A study was undertaken to determine the incidence of Acinetobacter baumannii and methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) contamination on reusable phlebotomy tourniquets at Wilford Hall Medical Center, Lackland AFB, TX. DESIGN Reusable tourniquets (n=200) were collected after being used for one day in the outpatient blood collection center (n=100) or during morning blood ...

DESCRIPTION A 56-year-old woman with previous breast cancer underwent a muscle-sparing transverse rectus abdominis myocutaneous flap to her left breast. She developed marked flap swelling postoperatively and episodes of pyrexia. A breast wound swab grew Escherichia coli and Acinetobacter baumannii. This strain of Acinetobacter was multidrug resistant, including resistance to meropenem.
متن کاملCarbapenem-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii contamination in an intensive care unit.
INTRODUCTION: Acinetobacter baumannii is a major pathogen causing infections in intensive care units (ICUs). In this study, we aimed to evaluate the presence of A. baumannii in an ICU environment and gloves from ICU workers and to characterize the antimicrobial resistance of the isolates in comparison with those isolated from ICU patients at the same hospital. METHODS: ICU samples were collec...
متن کاملAcinetobacter baumannii
Acinetobacter baumannii is an opportunistic bacterial pathogen primarily associated with hospital-acquired infections. The recent increase in incidence, largely associated with infected combat troops returning from conflict zones, coupled with a dramatic increase in the incidence of multidrug-resistant (MDR) strains, has significantly raised the profile of this emerging opportunistic pathogen. ...
متن کاملContamination of Ambient Air with Acinetobacter baumannii on Consecutive Inpatient Days.
Acinetobacter-positive patients had their ambient air tested for up to 10 consecutive days. The air was Acinetobacter positive for an average of 21% of the days; the rate of contamination was higher among patients colonized in the rectum than in the airways (relative risk [RR], 2.35; P = 0.006). Of the 6 air/clinical isolate pairs available, 4 pairs were closely related according to rep-PCR res...
